What player monitoring actually shows
Rust Alarm lets one account track up to five players by 17-digit Steam ID on a selected server. No nickname is required: an available Steam name is resolved automatically. The dashboard stores the latest observation, status duration and detected session history.
An observation is not a guess. “Online” appears after a supported source reports the player, “offline” follows a confirmed disappearance, and “no data” means there is no reliable signal at that moment.
Why the game sees someone that an external service cannot
The Rust client receives information as part of an active game connection. A server query endpoint, Steam and Rust+ may expose a smaller data set. Servers can hide player lists, replace names, delay updates or omit individual presence entirely.
A population counter such as 200/300 does not imply access to all 200 Steam IDs. Total population and an identifiable player list are different fields with different access rules.
When the result is most reliable
The best case is a server publishing a current player list while Steam exposes the relevant public profile data. Repeated polls can then confirm joins and leaves without turning one short network interruption into a false event.
After adding a target, allow several observation cycles. Check the last-updated time as well as the status colour: a fresh observation is more useful than an old label.
When accuracy is limited
If the server hides participants, a profile is private, the source is temporarily unavailable or the observation is stale, nobody can honestly guarantee the presence of an unrelated player. Rust Alarm labels stale and missing data instead of inventing a result.
RCON could expose more information to a server administrator, but Rust Alarm does not require RCON or assume access to somebody else’s server console. Monitoring uses permitted public signals only.
How to add a player correctly
Choose a connected server, paste the Steam ID without spaces and save the target. Complicated nickname characters do not matter. A Steam ID remains the stable identifier even if the display name changes.
The five-player limit applies per account. Remove an old target before adding a sixth. This limit discourages bulk collection and keeps service load predictable.
How to interpret an uncertain status
“Online” means the player was observed on the selected server; “offline” means a source confirmed absence after prior presence; “no data” or a stale marker means no conclusion is possible. Recheck the server connection after a wipe or address change.
Use history and several consecutive observations for decisions, not one request. An external service should never promise 100% accuracy when a server deliberately withholds its roster.
